Seasonal Lead Downtown Green & Clean Associate
Location: Main Street Ottumwa, Ottumwa, IA
Employment Type: Seasonal, 20-32 hrs per week (April - October)

Job Summary:
Main Street Ottumwa is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Downtown Maintenance Worker to enhance the beauty and cleanliness of our historic downtown district. This seasonal position involves supervising and participating in hands-on horticultural work including planting and maintaining flower beds, hanging and caring for flower baskets, and keeping public areas clean to ensure a welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The ideal candidate will take pride in their work, have physical stamina and a passion for outdoor beautification, to create and maintain the vibrant atmosphere of Ottumwa’s downtown Main Street District.The GCA will interact with visitors, residents, employees, businesses, and others in downtown Ottumwa, which requires a friendly, respectful, and professional demeanor.
Key Responsibilities:

Supervise and assist with planting, watering, weeding, and general maintenance of downtown flower beds and planters.

Ensure regular care of hanging flower baskets, including watering and monitoring plant health.

Oversee and participate in debris cleanup, including litter removal from sidewalks, streets, and public spaces.

Assign and oversee work for maintenance team members or volunteers.

Monitor plant health, report issues, and implement solutions for pest control or disease management.

Maintain an organized schedule for watering and general maintenance tasks.

Assist with seasonal transitions, including planting spring/summer flowers and removing spent plants in the fall.

Ensure public spaces are clean, attractive, and well-maintained for residents and visitors.

Communicate with the Main Street Ottumwa Director regarding maintenance needs and supply requirements.

Equipment Use: Safely operate and maintain tools such as watering cans, hoses, pruning shears, shovels, and other light gardening equipment.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Ability to perform physical tasks such as repeated bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and standing for extended periods in various weather conditions.

Basic knowledge of gardening, plant care, and landscaping techniques (preferred but not required; training provided).

Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Positive attitude and a commitment to improving the appearance of downtown Ottumwa.

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from work sites preferred.

Previous experience in landscaping, maintenance, or outdoor work is a plus.

Work Schedule:

Full-time, seasonal position (approximately 25-32 hours per week, depending on weather and project needs).
-
Hours typically occur early mornings or late afternoons to accommodate watering schedules and avoid peak heat.
-
Season runs from April through October, with potential for extension based on weather and program needs. Exposure to sun, wind, rain varying temperatures during the growing season.

Compensation:

$14.00 - $16.00 per hour, based on experience.

Clean & Green Seasonal Support Staff

Job Summary:
Under the supervision of Main Street Ottumwa, the Green & Clean Associate (CGA) is responsible for landscaping maintenance in the downtown area, including plantings, watering, weeding, mulching, and tree maintenance. The GCA will also assist with removal of litter, weeds, and debris from downtown sidewalks, green spaces, parking lots, and bioswale.
The position primarily involves working outdoors. The ideal candidate will take pride in their work, have physical stamina and a passion for outdoor beautification, to create and maintain the vibrant atmosphere of Ottumwa’s downtown Main Street District.

Key Responsibilities:

Flower Bed Maintenance: Plant, water, weed, fertilize, mulch, and maintain flower beds throughout the downtown district according to seasonal schedules and design plans.

Flower Basket Care: Install, water, fertilize, and maintain hanging flower baskets on light poles and other designated areas; remove dead blooms to ensure continuous growth and appeal.

Debris Cleanup: Regularly patrol Main Street district downtown streets, sidewalks, and public spaces to pick up litter, leaves, and other debris, ensuring a clean and tidy appearance.

Equipment Use: Safely operate and maintain tools such as watering cans, hoses, pruning shears, shovels, and other light gardening equipment.

Seasonal Tasks: Assist with seasonal transitions, including planting spring/summer flowers and removing spent plants in the fall.

Reporting: Notify supervisor of any damaged plants, irrigation issues, or areas requiring additional attention.
